Roxanne Turcotte

Roxanne Turcotte’s works are out there! They have been performed in concert in Aix-en-Provence, Barcelona, Birmingham, Bourges, Brussels, Crest, Edmonton, Geneva, Guelph, Le Havre, Lyon, Manchester, Marseille, Millery, Montpellier, Montréal, Nîmes, Orford, Oslo, Saarbrücken, Santiago and Sousse…

Active as a composer and sound designer, Roxanne Turcotte has built her aesthetics around a cinema-like art of integration. She also creates and performs music for television, cinema, radio, the stage, the web, and circus arts, in addition to creating sound, music, and visual installations. She is asked to sit on composition juries, and she regularly performs composition training sessions and workshops. Roxanne Turcotte is currently working on the integration of sound installations and live performance with multichannel fixed media.

After piano studies at the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal, she focused on composition and music technology, earning in 1988 a master’s degree in electroacoustic composition from the Université de Montréal, where she studied under Marcelle Deschênes, and Francis Dhomont. During her musical education she also studied with Françoise Aubut-Pratte, José Évangelista, Serge Garant, Claude Helffer, Christian Parent, Nil Parent, and Raoul Sosa.

To her credit, she has ten albums, a few publications, numerous concerts with various music ensembles, and multiple tours and concerts in Canada, the USA, and Europe.

The music of Roxanne Turcotte has won numerous awards and distinctions: International New Music Composer’s Competition (USA, 1987, ’89/90), Hugh Le Caine Award from the SOCAN Foundation (Canada, 1985, ’89), Luigi Russolo International Competition (Italy, 1989), 6th “Villes manifestes” Radio Art Competition (La Muse en circuit, France, 2005), Bourges International Electroacoustic Music and Sonic Art Competition (France, 2005, ’07, ’08), and Prix collégien de musique contemporaine (Sherbrooke, Québec, 2010).

Her electroacoustic works have been programmed by several events, such as: Cent jours d’art contemporain de Montréal (1985), World Music Days (Oslo, Norway; 1990), Palomar exhibit in Montréal (with photographer Martine Doyon, 1994), Jeunesses musicales Canada (1994), Florida Electroacoustic Music Festival in Gainesville (USA, 1996), Festival Montréal en lumière (with lighting engineer François Doyon, 2000), Synthèse in Bourges (France, 2000, ’03), Aujourd’hui Musiques in Perpignan (France, 2000), Futura in Crest (France, 1999, 2006, ’20), GMEM in Marseille (France, 2002), Zeppelin in Barcelona (Spain, 2004), Archipel in Geneva (Switzerland, 2005), Akousma (5) in Montréal (with lighting engineer François Doyon, 2005), Flora International in Montréal (with composers André Hamel and Diane Labrosse, 2006), Musique dans la rue in Aix-en-Provence (France, 2007), Erreur de type 27 in Québec City (2008), Festival of New Music Now Hear This in Edmonton (Canada, 2014), L’Espace du son in Brussels (Belgium, 2015), Klang! électroacoustique in Montpellier (France, 2017), Rencontres acousmatiques in Millery (France, 2018), Montréal / Nouvelles musiques (MNM, 2019, ’21), and BEAST FEaST in Birmingham (UK, 2021).

Roxanne Turcotte is a member of the Artistic Committee (2016-) of the Société de musique contemporaine du Québec (SMCQ), and a member of the Board of Directors 2016-) of the CMC Québec. She has received grants from the Canada Council for the Arts (CCA) and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ).
