A composer and sound designer, her musical aesthetic is rooted in a cinematic approach to integration that she calls cinemasonics. Roxanne Turcotte also creates and performs music for television, cinema, radio, the stage, the web, and circus arts, in addition to creating sound, music, and visual installations. She is frequently invited to serve on composition juries and conducts training sessions, lectures, and composition workshops. Roxanne Turcotte is currently working on the integration of sound installations and live performance with multichannel fixed media.

Originally trained as a pianist at the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal, she pursued graduate studies in electroacoustic composition under the guidance of Marcelle Deschênes and Francis Dhomont, and in 1988 became the first woman to earn a master’s degree in electroacoustic composition from the Université de Montréal. During her musical education she also studied with Françoise Aubut-Pratte, José Évangelista, Serge Garant, Claude Helffer, Christian Parent, Nil Parent, and Raoul Sosa. She has also studied in education at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM).

To her credit, she has ten albums, a few publications, numerous concerts with various music ensembles, and multiple tours and concerts in Canada, and abroad. She also participates in creative residencies in Europe.

The music of Roxanne Turcotte has won numerous awards and distinctions: Hugh Le Caine Award from the SOCAN Foundation (Canada, 1985, ’89), International New Music Composer’s Competition (USA, 1987, ’89-90), 6th Radio Art Competition (La Muse en circuit, France, 2005), Bourges International Electroacoustic Music and Sonic Art Competition (France, 2005, ’07, ’08), and Prix collégien de musique contemporaine (Québec, 2010, ’23). In 2021 she received SOCAN’s Jan V Matejcek Award for New Classical Music.

Her electroacoustic works have been programmed by several festivals, such as: Cent jours d’art contemporain de Montréal (1985), Montréal musiques actuelles / New Music America (1990), Futura in Crest (France, 1999, 2006, ’20), Montréal en lumière (2000), Synthèse in Bourges (France, 2000, ’03), Archipel in Geneva (Switzerland, 2005), Akousma in Montréal (2005, ’15), Now Hear This in Edmonton (Canada, 2014), L’Espace du son in Brussels (Belgium, 2015), Klang! électroacoustique in Montpellier (France, 2017), Montréal / Nouvelles musiques (MNM, 2019, ’21), BEAST FEaST in Birmingham (UK, 2021), World New Music Days (New Zealand, 2022; Portugal, 2025), and Cube Fest (USA, 2022).

Roxanne Turcotte has been a member of the Artistic Committee (2016-2021) of the Société de musique contemporaine du Québec (SMCQ), is a member of the boards of directors of the CMC Québec (2016-), and of the Groupe Le Vivier (2021-). She has received grants from the Canada Council for the Arts (CCA) and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ).
