Far bollire piano per 8 minuti

Stijn Govaere

Far bollire piano per 8 minuti has been performed in Brussels, Denton, Prague and San Francisco…

The title of this acousmatic work is a game of words. Translated into English that would read “Boil slowly for 8 minutes,” a looser translation could be “Boil a piano for 8 minutes.” The inspiration for this work came to me one day cooking whilst listening to some piano music on the radio. The contrast of the granular sound of boiling water or oil and the rich, harmonious sounds of the piano appealed to me. As we are boiling the piano (for 8 minutes), the piano sounds are rather dark and at some point melancholic as if it gave up any hope of escaping the boiling oil… The sound sources for this piece are: piano recorded at the studios of Musiques & Recherches (Ohain, Belgium) and boiling water / oil and cutlery from my kitchen.

Far bollire piano per 8 minuti was awarded an Honorable Mention in the Musica Nova 2013 International Competition of Electroacoustic Music (Prague, Czech Republic).
