Hidden Vistas

Jonty Harrison

Hidden Vistas has been performed in Birmingham…

Spaces, places, views, vistas — familiar and otherwise — conjured in the mind’s eye at the prompting of sound alone. But wait — can the ear not perceive the simultaneous layering of locations, of different times and spaces, shifting unpredictably through the agency of motion and of memory?

Hidden Vistas was composed in 20 channels for a site-specific performance at the Ikon Gallery in Birmingham (England, UK). Loudspeakers were deployed at floor level and high up, pointing at the ceiling, in three adjacent galleries, with additional speakers in a side room and at the bottom of a staircase — there were thus three main physical (and acoustic) spaces, through which the audience could wander at will, plus two ancillary locations from which sound could be heard.
