Companioning

Fulya Uçanok

Companioning has been performed in Istanbul and Montréal…

Companioning is a new composition for string quartet, live electronics, and fixed media. The work investigates forms of companionship, within the notion of sympoietic musicking (co-creative) processes that emerge through shared agency. The composition unfolds as a continuous structure with internal sections articulated through gradual transformations. Performers navigate shifting relationships with one another and with the electronics, which include real-time processing that function as active relational agents within the musical ecology. Through these interactions, the piece explores contingent relations in which listening, interpreting, and responding are continually negotiated within varying musical contexts.

The work attends to motion, continuity, and transformation across multiple temporal and perceptual scales, from micro-level articulations to larger structural trajectories, and from varying densities of events. As these transformations unfold, different relational dynamics and modes of listening emerge, inviting both performers and listeners to inhabit sound from multiple postures of attention, and to take up listening as something that always takes place “in company.”
